Consumers across the world are becoming more conscious and less tolerant of the wrong doings of companies that sell them goods and services. Ultra fast fashion brands like Boohoo have come under scrutiny for practices that encourage modern day slavery. Working conditions in supplier factories which include factory workers being paid a lot less than the minimum wage, have caused consumers and fashion enthusiasts to begin to #ReflectOnSlaveryinFashion.
Although several designer and fast fashion brands have said that their entire production process sometimes involve 3rd party suppliers who they have no control over, many critics say that traceability and transparency is more crucial than ever. Fashion brands need to do a better job of letting consumers know how their products are made. A few steps to take include: working hand in hand with suppliers to ensure adequate compensation of workers, conducting audits to guarantee the absence of forced labour and suspending relationships with 3rd party contractors who do not enforce ethical practices. Governments across the developed world also need to ensure that transparent supply chain laws are put in place to limit and ultimately eradicate modern day slavery.
